After this pastime, Krishna was walking around in the forest and He saw that the cowherd men were preparing for an elaborate yajna. The cowherd men were actually making preparations for the annual Indra puja.
“Krishna is in the heart of every living being. He not only hears what you say, sees what you do, feels what you feel. But He is completely conscious of your intention.”
Isvara sarva bhutanam – Krishna is in the heart of every living being. He not only hears what you say, sees what you do, feels what you feel. But He is completely conscious of your intention. Krishna specially watches over people whom He gives serious responsibility. Indra is very diligent in performing his duties but Krishna saw that he was proud. Indra was very opulent and influential and had great powers in universal management. Krishna knows that when you get management authority and when you get power prestige, wealth, the tendency is you become proud – the number one worst enemy for a devotee. Pride comes before a fall. From false ego all other anarthas are stimulated and arised. So Krishna understood that Indra’s spiritual advancement was being blocked by his false pride and therefore He had to save him.

Indra being a devotee is constantly hearing from the scriptures that one has to give up false pride and he is probably thinking that he is doing all that. This is another trick of pride; one thinks that I am very humble. In order to protect His devotee Krishna sometimes crushes that devotee’s pride. It’s not easy, it’s very painful. It’s like a major surgical operation without anaesthesia.
Krishna wanted to crush Indra’s pride, satisfy the hearts of His devotees and show the world that there is no need to worship any demigod but just worship Him.
